Waste management
Manny was deeply involved in teaching and training local officials in the municipalities of Alburquerque and Panglao in the province of Bohol on how to effectively manage solid waste disposal from the Barangays. He conducted "Train the Trainer" courses for the officials, who in turn, taught their lower officials, the pasureros (garbage collectors) and household members. It's a hands-on training where the participants learn how to properly segregate, shred and compost bio-degradable waste. (*A good and healthy environment eliminates Dengue, Malaria and other such diseases which is still prevalent in poorer regions of the Philippines.)
See below the transformation that has taken place in Lourdes, where the local dump site of Panglao is found.
Before there was waste lying everywhere, but it was transformed into an organic plantation with the garbage being segregated and properly shredded, recycled and turned into first class organic fertilizer. The Lourdes dump site was once considered the shame of Panglao, but later it was recognized.for being first place for best housekeeping for three consecutive years.
Manny and Jun, with the support of the local government, transformed this garbage wasteland into a fruitful and fertile garden. Through their initiative, hard work and sharing lots of information via many seminars, the waste was segregated in the households and picked up daily in the many villages of Panglao.
