STEPS Samar
In September 2018, Manny went to Catarman, one of the poorest communities in the North of Samar, to help expand our STEPS preschool program. He was able to teach almost 20 teachers the mechanics of our program. Through one of our dear friends we received generous sponsorship from abroad to equip the upcoming new STEPS school with the necessary tools to teach groups of preschoolers. Until the preschool will start, some of the teachers have been using the equipment to teach older children on weekends.
Since Samar is often exposed to severe weather conditions, such as typhoons, floods etc, the official opening of a new STEPS school has taken its time. This February 2019, teachers from Catarman and Tagapul-an, an island off Calbayog (see map), came for a hands-on teaching and training seminar to our STEPS school in Panglao, where they learned firsthand how to teach the children with our tools.
Since beginning of March 2019, several localities are teaching preschoolers via the STEPS Program! Below you see pictures and videos of our STEPS teachers' seminars, as well as of the new preschool programs in Catarman, Tagapul-an and Calbayog. Some of the children are already finished reading book 1 of our 12-course Early Bird Reader Program.
Beginning of July 2019, our head teacher Ellen went for a visit to see the progress of the STEPS program in Catarman, Calbayog and Tagapul-an. Since our start in March this year, many more localities are interested in using our STEPS preschool program, and we are now in the process of getting sponsorships for the initial set-up for their programs.
Update April 2021: Despite Corona and its lock-downs, we were able to open a new STEPS program this year in Bukid in the Northern part of Samar. We have now a total of 7 and 8 existing STEPS preschool programs, which depends on the state of the lock-downs, with 83 STEPS students in total.
Update May 2022: This year we have been teaching the STEPS program in 8 locations. Most have moved from modular teaching to face-to-face teaching.
Update April 2024: For several reasons, such as lack of funds, personnel etc, we have had only 2 programs in recent months. But in March we reopened a STEPS house schooling program in Las Navas.
