Teaching Arts & crafts
Besides tourism, a great percentage of the people on the island of Panglao live of the fishing industry, a few grow seaweeds. Some live of the land, but not all Barangays have fertile grounds; some are too rocky to grow anything. Since fish population has been reduced in recent years due to over-fishing and there is little opportunity to find other livelihood to sustain them and their families, many of the poor have lost their vision and resorted to gambling and drinking. As an alternative, we are teaching Crochet, Beading and Macrame Arts to those that are interested, as well as Crafts made of recycled materials. Several of the parents of our STEPS students have already been learning from us, and we are occasionally teaching orphans and older children. The finished products are sold in local hotels & resorts, and the proceeds go the the artists and the poor. We also use a percentage to support our STEPS preschool program.
