Expanding STEPS: STEPS Preschool Program in Cagayan de Oro, Mindanao
It is our vision and goal to expand the STEPS preschool program to other parts of the country. As part of this, Manny and Ellen visited Brgy. Carmen in Cagayan de Oro, Mindanao, on July 3 & 4, 2017, to help with the launching of the new STEPS program for 30 preschoolers, age 4. It's a joint effort of the local government, WWFM and other organisations/associations. Below you see pictures which, when clicked on, enlarge.

Many children in public schools don't have good reading skills, even in higher levels. That is why we emphasize reading in our preschools.
Our teaching methods are mainly audio-visual. The children love school and learn in a playful manner. We encourage the parents to take part in school and help teach with simple aids, such as flash cards. "School starts at Home", is our motto, and we have had good success by including the parents in the learning process of the students. In this video you see some of the children reading fluently after only 2 months of learning to read. |

On April 3, 2018, after 10 months, the STEPS program that was launched in Carmen, which is one of the poorest communities in Cagayan de Oro in the south of the Philippines, celebrated its conclusion with 29 children. |
