Since the 13th of June we have 50 new students, ages 3-5, that are coming daily for classes at our STEPS mission school. Until we have evaluated the children's learning level, we have divided them into 2 groups. Daily they are being taught by the teachers Ellen, Joyjoy and Joy.
We use many audio-visual tools to make learning fun and exciting, and the children receive lots of praise and even a stamp for good performance at the end of their class.
Reading is a major, since there is a great percentage of children in Philippine public schools that have difficulties in this subject, and we like to preempt that by building a good foundation early on. Henceforth a big part of our teaching is focused on reading, phonics and the alphabet. Children that have passed through our STEPS program are usually some of the best students later on in their Elementary school classes.
Our success is also based on the involvement of their parents. "School starts at home" is our motto, and we expect the mothers and fathers to use the simple teaching tools at home, such as flashcards and readers that are readily available.
