Bio-Ponics

There are many things I admire about my husband Manny — but one that always amazes me is his passion for organic farming and his endless creativity.

He jokingly calls himself a “lazy farmer.” If you know him, you know that is not true at all. He’s not lazy — he simply refuses to waste effort where wisdom can make things lighter. His heart is always the same: How can we make this simpler? Easier? Healthier? Better for farmers?

Recently he started experimenting with something he calls “Bio-Ponics.” (His own name, of course 😉)

He grows seedlings in small recycled yogurt cups or coconut shells with just a little soil. At the bottom of each cup is a hole, and attached to it is a strip from a recycled mop head. That strip reaches down into a basin of water. Instead of watering each plant again and again, he simply fills the basin — and the mop strip gently draws water up into the cup as needed.

After a short while, something beautiful happens: strong, long roots grow down, reaching for the water themselves.

Simple.
Low cost.
Recycled materials.
Less labor.
Healthy roots.

This is Manny’s heart — always thinking how to lighten the load of farmers, how to use what is already available, how to work with nature instead of against it.

I’m so proud of him. 💚

Sometimes the best inventions don’t come from big laboratories — they grow quietly in small gardens, in the hands of someone who truly cares.
